OSU Extension Saturday classes

lay_hdr_tagOSU Extension is having a free winter workshop series for youth aged 9 – 18. This will take place bi-monthly on Saturdays from Jan. – March. The workshops will cover topics including baking, gardening, food preservation, and fine arts, utilizing different professionals from throughout our county. It’s completely free, and youth do not need to be 4-H members to participate, but each workshop is capped at 20 youth.

OSU Extension will also have a Jr. Master Naturalist program, in which experts teach youth ages 9 – 14 about natural resources through science experiments, and fieldtrips to a variety of local public lands. This was previously only opened to homeschool youth, but we are expanding it to youth from all educational backgrounds. This program costs $20 for the year and includes a 4-H membership, but we offer full scholarships for all youth in need.

Donations for winter Food Boxes

tin-can-528I wanted to send a reminder that we are collecting non-perishable food items to help us fill winter food boxes for 25-30 of our Edgewood families.  These boxes will be distributed at the end of next week and so we are taking donations until then….preferably by next Wednesday.  While we have received several food items already, we have quite a ways to go to be able to meet our goal.

These boxes are to help support families and kids who rely daily on our Edgewood cafeteria and the free and reduced meals it provides that will not be available during the 18 days of winter break.

Each box will have various, well-rounded items and staples that are kid and family-friendly, including produce and dairy.  Here is how you can help:

Do you have items already in your pantry that you could donate? Could you pick up a few extra items next time you are at the grocery store? What do your kids eat during the day that is easy for them to prepare? We are lucky to have 2 gracious parents committed to donating all produce, so we are looking for non-perishable items such as pastas, sauces, beans, canned vegetables, soups, cereal, peanut butter & jelly, fruit cups, granola bars, etc.  Cash donations are great too!  Because of storage issues this time of year, we will use these donations to purchase dairy and proteins.

No sign up is necessary!  Please bring into the office any non-perishable items or cash donations that you would like to donate to the food boxes.
